MDR Aktuell - The news radio (short: MDR Aktuell ; own spelling: mdr AKTUELL ) is a radio program of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk based in Halle (Saale) . From January 1992 to May 2016 the station was called MDR Info . MDR Aktuell is designed purely as a news and information program and is supplemented by an online offer, which can be used to access the latest news, service information and various podcasts from the program.
The station has over 300,000 listeners per day in central Germany . Across Germany there are even more, as the station broadcasts its program between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. under the name ARD Infonacht for an expanded broadcasting area.
On May 2, 2016, MDR Info was renamed MDR Aktuell as part of a program reform . The program broadcasting center will also move from Halle to Leipzig to the MDR headquarters by 2018.

MDR Aktuell can be received on seven frequencies in central Germany in places with sufficient digital radio coverage.
Broadcast via FM and medium wave
The program is broadcast almost everywhere in the MDR broadcasting area (Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia) via 77 mostly weak VHF stations . In addition, the program was also broadcast via medium wave until 2013 , most recently via the stations Wiederau (783 kHz), Wilsdruff (1044 kHz) and Reichenbach (1188 kHz). On March 20, 2013, the MDR announced that the operation of the medium wave frequencies would be discontinued on April 30, 2013. On the morning of April 30, 2013 at 6 a.m., the broadcast of the program on the medium wave frequencies was discontinued with the activation of a one-week notice loop indicating the alternative reception channel DAB +.

The program schedule is repeated every hour.
Sending scheme
The MDR Aktuell editorial team is staffed 24 hours a day. Detailed messages are sent around the clock on the hour and half hour, and short messages 15 minutes before and after every hour on the hour. In addition to the reports, both programs also include weather and traffic information for the broadcast area. During the rest of the time, moderated, current reports or interviews with correspondents are running. This content is either taken from the ARD , commissioned from correspondents or supplied by own reporters. Jingles are produced by a production company as well as in-house. In addition, the ARD radio studio on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the MDR weather studio are switched every hour during the day . Sport also plays an important role: important football events such as Champions League games with German participation or German international matches are broadcast in full, as well as the Bundesliga and the 3rd football league with the participation of clubs from the broadcast area live in Conference call sent. In addition, a sports section with current reports is an integral part of the program.
Fixed sections in the program are the "calendar sheet" broadcast several times in the morning and afternoon, where a historical event or anniversary of the day is remembered, as well as the satirical review of the day "Schall und Rauch" on the evening of each day.
Since MDR is currently staffed around the clock, it has the function of a "lead manager" for the radio correspondent network of ARD during the night. This means that in crisis situations between midnight and 6 a.m., MDR Aktuell takes over the management of the correspondents and the distribution of their reports until the actual sending parent companies are occupied again.
Since April 1, 2011, the night program has been broadcast from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. under the name ARD Infonacht as the fourth ARD community night program on the radio.
Varia
The most extensive series of programs by MDR Info was in 1999: from January 1 to December 31, a different exclusively produced contribution from the Stories of the Century was broadcast daily , each dealing with a historical event with reference to the broadcast area from the century that was coming to an end. Carsten Heller was responsible for editing the 365 articles. In 2000 the 50 best contributions appeared as a 4-CD box with the title Das NachrichtenRadio MDR info - Stories of the Century - Contemporary Witnesses from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .
