Karola Wille (* 22. March 1959 in Karl-Marx-Stadt as Karola Lorenz) is a German lawyer . She has been the director of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) since November 1, 2011 , where she has been the legal director since 1996 . From January 2016 to December 2017 she was chairwoman of the ARD .

School and study

From 1965 to 1973 Wille attended a polytechnic high school in Karl-Marx-Stadt, then from 1973 to 1977 the EOS Karl Marx , which she graduated with the Abitur . At the age of 18 she joined the SED . Then she took a degree in law at the University of Jena and was there in 1986 with a thesis on legal procedure in criminal matters between the socialist countries to Dr. jur. PhD . She worked as a research assistant at the University of Leipzig and was qualified to teach ( facultas docendi ) in media law . At the Institute of International Studies, which the "class enemy" - the Federal Republic of Germany - firmly had in mind, she published together with an intelligence officer on special assignment ( OibE ) the compilation of the International Conference on current issues of revanchism in Germany , in which u. a. can be read: "In the political and ideological arsenal of the most aggressive and reactionary forces of monopoly capital, revanchism occupies an important place ...". After the fall of the Berlin Wall , she continued her legal training at the Open University in Hagen from 1991 to 1993 .

Working life

In 1991 she briefly served as legal advisor to the City Council of Leipzig before becoming the first consultant in the legal management of the MDR in the same year. There she became Deputy Legal Director in 1993 and Legal Director on November 1, 1996.

In 2002 she received an honorary professorship for media law from the University of Leipzig . In the course of the restructuring of the MDR, she was unanimously nominated by the Board of Directors on October 7, 2011 as the successor to the resigned artistic director Udo Reiter and elected to this office on October 23, which she took up on November 1, with a clear majority of 32 out of 39 votes .

In 2012, Wille took over the patronage of the media forum in Mittweida organized by students. At the constituent meeting on February 12, 2014, she was elected Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA) and is thus Bernd Neumann's deputy .

From January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017, Karola Wille was MDR Director of the ARD for two years . With effect from November 1, 2016, the MDR Broadcasting Council confirmed Karola Wille as director of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk for a further six years.

Private

Karola Willes' former husband worked as a military prosecutor in the GDR. She is divorced and has a daughter.
