Thomas Kleist

Thomas Kleist (born December 19, 1955 in Gehweiler ) is a German lawyer specializing in media law and director of Saarland Broadcasting .

biography

Kleist studied law from 1975 to 1980 at Saarland University , where he also worked as a research assistant from 1980 to 1983. In 1985 he was elected director and chairman of the board of the Saarland State Broadcasting Authority (today: State Media Authority Saarland ). From 1995 to 1996 he was also chairman of the directors' conference of the state media authorities. In 1996 he was appointed State Secretary in the Saarland Ministry for Women, Labor, Health and Social Affairs in the Oskar Lafontaine cabinet , and at the beginning of 1996 in the Reinhard Klektiven cabinet . In this capacity he was a member of the Broadcasting Council of the Saarland Broadcasting Corporation .
In 1990, Kleist initiated the
Institute for European Media Law (EMR) in Saarbrücken and Brussels together with Reinhold Kopp, the former Saarland Minister for Economic Affairs and later General Representative of Volkswagen AG, and became its director in 2000. Kleist founded his own consulting company, which deals with media law and media policy , particularly in the European context, as well as hospital management. From 2000 to 2006 he was managing director of Hospitec GmbH, a company of VSE AG . Kleist was admitted to the bar from 2000 to 2011, and from 2008 in a Neunkirchen law firm specializing in media law, healthcare and public affairs . Kleist is a member of numerous supervisory boards in public and private broadcasting as well as in the Saarland banking industry. a. in the economic advisory board of the Saarland Landesbank, SaarLB. In addition to teaching at the Saarland University in the field of German and international information and media law, he also works as a lecturer in the master’s degree in media law, which the Mainz Media Institute organizes in cooperation with the University of Mainz . On April 15, 2011, he was elected director of Saarland Broadcasting with a narrow result (one vote ahead of the seventh ballot) after the long-time director Fritz Raff had died in January. Kleist took up his director's position on July 1, 2011. His term of office is six years and re-election is possible. On July 4, 2016, Kleist was unanimously confirmed in his office for a further six years - starting July 1, 2017.


In 2012 Kleist was appointed honorary professor at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

Thomas Kleist is a member of the SPD . Until June 2005 he was chairman of the SPD city association St. Wendel. Until 2009 he was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD.

Thomas Kleist is married and has two children. He lives with his family in St. Wendel. He volunteered in hospice work as well as with Lebenshilfe Saarland e. V.
