Reinhold Kopp (born June 28, 1949 in Bexbach ) is a former German politician ( SPD ), lawyer and economic functionary.

Life

Kopp passed his Abitur in 1967 in Homburg and then studied law and political science at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . From 1975 he worked in the federal finance administration for five years.

Political career

From 1979 to 1985 Kopp was a member of the Saarland state parliament ; Among other things, he held the functions of a parliamentary managing director and chaired the environmental committee and the hazardous waste investigation committee. From 1985 to 1991 he headed the State Chancellery of Saarland as State Secretary under Prime Minister Oskar Lafontaine . In the Lafontaine II cabinet he headed the Ministry of Economy, Transport and Agriculture from June 5, 1991. In 1993, Kopp was awarded the negative “ Dinosaur of the Year ” prize for his “particularly backward-looking” forest policy ; The prize was brought into being by NABU forest spokesman Wilhelm Bode , a senior employee of Kopp in the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In the course of a government reshuffle, Kopp was dismissed as Minister of Economics in 1994.

Kopp then worked as a lawyer specializing in commercial law in a law firm in Saarbrücken. At the same time, in 1995 he became deputy director of the Institute for European Media Law in Saarbrücken and Brussels, which he initiated together with Thomas Kleist (until 2003). From 1995 to 2000 he was chairman of the administrative board of Saarländischer Rundfunk . In July 2014 he was elected First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Institute for European Media Law in Saarbrücken and Brussels.

Worked at Volkswagen AG

On the recommendation of Peter Hartz , Kopp joined Volkswagen AG in mid-1998 , where he initially headed government relations as a member of the Board of Management. In 1999 he became an authorized signatory and in 2000 a general representative of the company. In addition to other operational tasks and functions in supervisory bodies, he was in charge of Group external relations until June 30, 2007. Among other things, he signed a cooperation agreement between Volkswagen and the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), on the basis of which environmental projects such as “fuel-saving training” and stakeholder dialogues on critical topics take place. In addition, Kopp promoted country partnerships for biofuels .

His work for the automotive group led Reinhold Kopp into a conflict with Deutsche Umwelthilfe . Their federal managing director Jürgen Resch accused Kopp of operating lobby politics in a particularly "ruthless way" . His influence is said to have delayed the introduction of the soot filter for diesel cars planned for 2005 and its tax incentives.

Today Kopp works as a lawyer in Berlin; he is also an honorary professor at UMC Potsdam (FH) .

Private

Reinhold Kopp is married and has two daughters.

Awards

In 1997 the French government awarded him the Order of Chevalier dans l Ordre national du Mérite for his commitment to Franco-German and interregional relations in the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region .
