The dinosaur of the year

Dinosaur of the Year is a negative award sponsored by the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU) .

The association has been awarding the prize annually since 1993 to public figures who, in the opinion of the Naturschutzbund, represent outdated environmental standards or " have proven to be particularly antiquated both through outstanding individual achievements and the sum total of their overall work in environmental protection ". The winners will receive a 2.6 kilogram replica of a dinosaur cast from pewter .

In 2003 and 2004, the dinosaur of the year was not awarded because the association, according to its own statements, had doubts "whether such a striking action would still fit into the political landscape". From 2005 to 2018, the prize was awarded again on a regular basis, because NABU wants to raise public awareness of environmental issues and point out actions that are harmful to the environment. There was no award in 2019; In 2020, for the first time, not a person but a specific project was named “Environmental Sin of the Year”.

List of award winners

year Award winners Function / project Reasons for awarding the award
Reinhold Kopp (SPD) Minister of Economics of the Saarland For his “particularly backward-looking environmental policy ”, in which he “made numerous anti-ecological decisions without need”. This is expressed, among other things, in the fact that he has destroyed numerous positive approaches by his predecessor Hajo Hoffmann . At the time, he had converted the Saar Forest to a near-natural forest management system based on the permanent forest principle, which was respected nationwide . Also highlighted are the standstill of the alternative energies funding program and the construction of the Bexbach coal-fired power plant , which, according to calculations by environmentalists, pollutes the air with an additional three million tons of carbon dioxide every year.
Conrad-Michael Lehment (FDP) Transport Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania For his "vehement, but ignorant setting of the course" during the construction of the Baltic Sea motorway (A20) .
Hans-Olaf Henkel BDI President For his condemnation of the ecological tax as “nonsense” and as “entry into an ecological planned economy ”. Furthermore, his arguments in the nuclear energy debate, with which he leads the "battles of yesterday with the arguments of the day before yesterday". The former eco-manager of the year 1992 had changed as BDI-President from “eco-Paulus” to “eco-Saul”.
Günter Rexrodt (FDP) Federal Minister of Economics For his relentless attempts to “prevent even the slightest progress in environmental policy”. This is expressed, among other things, by an industry-oriented policy which makes a significant contribution to the failure to achieve the climate protection target set by the federal government itself (lowering carbon dioxide emissions by a quarter below the 1990 level by 2005). A draft Energy Industry Act is highlighted , the price war of which for large customers promotes energy waste. Furthermore, the deregulation and dismantling of civil rights in waste incineration , the operation of genetic engineering and the prevention of environmental impact assessments when building power lines.
Theo Waigel (CSU) Federal Minister of Finance Because he runs " financial policy against nature conservation ". Waigel bears the political responsibility for the sale of large parts of old East German national parks to private interested parties.
Otto Majewski Federal Chairman of Bayernwerk AG For his "vehement struggle" against phasing out nuclear energy . Like no other nuclear manager, Majewski exceeded the amount of the alleged compensation claims of the power plant operators and demanded three-digit billions as the cost of the nuclear phase-out.
Erwin Teufel (CDU) Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Because he "harmed nature and environmental protection personally" and refused to "even take the simplest steps for nature conservation". This is expressed, among other things, by preventing an expert opinion on the establishment of the first Baden-Württemberg National Park in the northern Black Forest . Further reasons are the Baden-Württemberg environmental partnership listed in the coalition agreement of 1996 , an “industry-dominated deregulation body for environmental protection”, as well as the sale of the state-owned shares of EnBW to France, which means the promotion of nuclear power to Germany.
Lee R. Raymond President of the Exxon oil company For Exxon's “ energy and climate policy blockade”, which is expressed, among other things, in membership of the Global Climate Coalition . The industry lobby group opposed stricter climate protection rules (in contrast to other oil companies such as BP or Shell , which had left the group and dedicated themselves to research into alternative energies).
Gerd Sonnleitner President of the German Farmers' Association (DBV) For his “consistent braking performance in the matter of agricultural turnaround ”, which is reflected in, among other things, his “remarkably simple” lobbying work , his “constant litany against every overdue reform step from the Federal Nature Conservation Act to the ecological tax” and his “permanent [n] ] No to improvements in animal husbandry and the reduction of pesticides and fertilizers ”.
Gerhard Goll CEO of Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) For his "persistent attempts to secure a future for atomic energy in Germany", for example by sticking to the Obrigheim nuclear power plant , which at the time was 32 years old and was the oldest nuclear power plant in Germany.
Prize not awarded
Prize not awarded
Ludwig Georg Braun President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( DIHK) For his "persistent anti-ecological stance in public", for example in the DIHK position paper for a change in strategy in environmental policy , in which a U-turn in environmental policy was called for before the federal election .
Harry Roels CEO of RWE  AG For his "unrestrained nuclear policy and the provocative request to extend the life of Germany's oldest and most failure-prone reactor, Biblis A ".
Joachim Hunold CEO of Air Berlin For his "ignorance of necessary climate protection measures". Although the negative consequences of climate change for people and nature are known, he downplayed the problem in public and tried “to sell the aircraft as a climate-friendly means of transport”. In addition, Hunold polemicizes "against the long overdue introduction of a mineral oil and eco-tax on aviation kerosene ".
Michael Glos (CSU) Federal Minister of Economics For his “catastrophic ecological balance”, because he promotes nuclear technology, softens the protests against the construction of further coal-fired power plants and blocks the combined heat and power technology . He was largely responsible for the fact that "the energy and climate package of the federal government was watered down so that the necessary reduction in greenhouse gases in Germany by 40 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 cannot be achieved".
Hans-Werner Sinn President of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research "Hans-Werner Sinn acts irresponsibly when he questions central climate protection instruments such as the Renewable Energy Sources Act , approves the extension of the service life of nuclear power plants and generally demonizes an ecologically oriented policy as harmful," said NABU President Olaf Tschimpke . In the financial and economic crisis, Sinn also spread his outdated theories of the market that regulates everything .
Jürgen Grossmann CEO of RWE  AG "With his unrestrained and provocative influence on the federal government for the extension of the service life of the nuclear power plants, which culminated in an advertising campaign initiated by him in late summer, Mr. Großmann truly deserved the award this year" (NABU President Olaf Tschimpke).
Michael Thamm President of AIDA Cruises For the particularly high emissions from shipping : "Your supposedly 'white fleets' are in truth dirty soot spinners, because the cruise ships still use toxic heavy fuel on the high seas, " explained NABU President Olaf Tschimpke. “This means that a single ocean liner emits as many pollutants on a cruise as five million cars on the same route. The dangers for the environment and human health could easily be avoided, but out of greed for profit, German shipowners have so far refused to use marine diesel and install exhaust technology such as soot particle filters . "
Richard J. Vogel Chairman of TUI Cruises
Ilse Aigner (CSU) Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection For their “backward -looking clientele policy ”, which contradicts sustainable and future-oriented policy making. The main reasons for this are that Aigner is sticking to an environmentally harmful agricultural policy and has not been committed enough to advocating a better animal protection law . Furthermore, she had blocked a new regulation of hunting law and did not advocate more sustainable fishing .
Wolfgang Burgard Managing Director of the Federation of Beverage Packaging of the Future The association, which was only founded in October 2013 by Aldi , Lidl , Lekkerland , PepsiCo , Red Bull , MEG , Ball and Rexam , received the award for its advocacy of one-way beverage packaging, because one-way plastic bottles and beverage cans wasted raw materials and thus favored global warming . Nabu President Olaf Tschimpke : "This is not about beverage packaging of the future, but about tough economic interests at the expense of the environment."
Gernot Kalkoffen ExxonMobil's European boss Kalkoffen play down the controversial fracking process and he stands for a backward- looking energy policy . Exxon is sticking to the extraction and burning of fossil fuels despite climate change . Instead of investing money in new markets for energy-efficient services and the expansion of renewable energies , Exxon Mobil is relying on natural gas through fracking.
Philipp zu Guttenberg President of the Working Group of German Forest Owners' Associations He “receives the negative award, among other things, for his resistance to natural forest development. His interests are limited to the economic usability of the forest resource. "
Werner Baumann Chairman-Executive Board of Bayer AG The takeover of the US seed specialist Monsanto, which was initiated under Baumann, contradicts the wishes of environmentalists and consumers for a non-toxic and GMO- free agriculture.
Joachim Rukwied President of the German Farmers' Association Joachim Rukwied denies "the responsibility of agriculture for the extinction of species and persistently defends a subsidy system that is worth billions of euros and is at the expense of nature, farmers and taxpayers."
Rolf Martin Schmitz CEO of RWE  AG Rolf Martin Schmitz "with his outmoded demonstration of power in the dispute over the clearing of the Hambacher Forest put himself on the sidelines."
Prize not awarded
A 26 east Motorway project in Hamburg For the first time, NABU did not award a person, but a project as environmental sin of the year. The planned A 26 East motorway is "extremely harmful to the climate, incredibly expensive and destructive to nature". The 10 km long “Hafenpassage” is linked to high growth in the Port of Hamburg , but the figures are based “on completely exaggerated handling expectations”. Valuable fen soils , which make an important contribution to biodiversity and as carbon stores, would be destroyed.
City of Emden Conrebbersweg building area In 2021, NABU did not award a person, but again a project as environmental sin of the year. Residential houses are to be built on 77 hectares of wet meadows on a planned new development area in Emden . The project on Conrebbersweg is "representative of the destruction of nature through soil sealing in all of Germany". An intact biotope will be destroyed, protected species will have to give way, and construction will take place in the coastal city one meter below sea level.
