Werner Baumann (born October 6, 1962 in Krefeld ) has been CEO of Bayer AG since May 1, 2016 .

Life & work

Werner Baumann was born on October 6, 1962 in Krefeld, the son of a baker . After studying economics at RWTH Aachen University and the University of Cologne , the business graduate specializing in taxes and accounting joined Bayer AG in 1988 . In Leverkusen , he got his first job in the corporate finance department. In 1991 he took on a position in controlling at Bayer Hispania Comercial in Barcelona . Here he became assistant to the management in 1995. A year later, Baumann moved to Bayer Corporation in Tarrytown , USA . Most recently there he headed the global organization Business Planning & Administration for the Diagnostics division. In July 2002 Baumann returned to Germany and became a member of the Executive Committee and Head of Central Administration & Organization at Bayer HealthCare. In October 2003 he was appointed to the Board of Management of the newly founded Bayer HealthCare AG subgroup , where he also held the position of Labor Director . As a member of the Board of Management and Labor Director of Bayer Schering Pharma from 2006 to September 2009 , he also accompanied the integration phase of the company into the then subgroup.

On January 1, 2010, Baumann became Chief Financial Officer of Bayer AG. From October 1, 2014 until his appointment as Chief Executive Officer, he was responsible for strategy and portfolio management on the Group Executive Board and also for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. From April to the end of December 2015, Baumann was also Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer HealthCare AG. On April 26, 2019, discharge was refused at the Annual General Meeting with 55.5% against. Baumann is the first incumbent CEO of a DAX group that shareholders have withdrawn from their trust.

Baumann is considered to be responsible for the controversial takeover of the US seed specialist Monsanto by Bayer. At the end of December 2016, he was awarded the negative Dinosaur of the Year prize by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland . This was justified by the fact that the takeover initiated by him was in contradiction to a “non-toxic and GMO- free agriculture”.

Baumann is treasurer of the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft and was president of the Deutsches Aktieninstitut from 2013 to 2017 . He is married and has four kids.
