Michael Glos
Michael Glos (born December 14, 1944 in Brünnau ) is a German politician ( CSU ).
From 2005 to 2009 he was Federal Minister for Economics and Technology and from 1993 to 2005 he was chairman of the CSU regional group and first deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .
education and profession
After completing secondary school , Glos completed an apprenticeship as a miller . In 1967 he passed the master's examination. In 1968 he took over the management of his parents' grain mill and agricultural business in the Stolzenmühle near Prichsenstadt .
Party career
Glos has been a member of the CSU since 1970 and was the founding chairman of the CSU local association in Prichsenstadt in 1972. From 1975 to 1993 he was chairman of the CSU district association in Kitzingen . Glos has been a member of the board of the CSU district association Lower Franconia since 1976 and was district chairman from 1993 to 2011. During this time he was also a member of the presidium and the state executive committee of the CSU. He has been honorary chairman of the district association since 1993 and of the district association since 2011.
Member of Parliament
Glos belonged to the city council of Prichsenstadt from 1972 to 1978 and from 1975 to 1993 the district council of the district of Kitzingen .
From 1976 to 2013 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1987 to 1990 he was chairman of the parliamentary group on finance and at the same time the finance and tax policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. From 1990 to the end of 1992 he was deputy group chairman for the economy, transport, medium-sized businesses and agriculture sector . From January 22, 1993 to November 21, 2005 he was chairman of the CSU regional group and thus first deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, the longest uninterrupted incumbent in the history of the regional group.
Glos has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the constituency of Schweinfurt . In March 2012, he announced that he would no longer run in the 2013 federal election. Anja Weisgerber became his successor in the Bundestag constituency .
Public offices
Glos was appointed as Federal Minister of Economics and Technology in the government that was formed by Angela Merkel after the 2005 general election ( Merkel I cabinet , a grand coalition). In this office he was seen as a representative of a conservative economic policy; he rarely appeared in the public eye.
On February 7, 2009, he unexpectedly announced his readiness to step down as Federal Minister. Media reported that he had given the new beginning in the CSU and his age as reasons in a letter to the CSU chairman Horst Seehofer . Seehofer was initially against the resignation, but agreed the next day. On February 9, 2009, Glos officially asked Chancellor Angela Merkel to be released. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg , General Secretary of the CSU, was proposed as his successor on February 9, 2009 . On February 10, 2009, Glos was retired from office and Guttenberg succeeded him.
In an interview in 2011 he said in retrospect that he had been taken by surprise by his appointment as Minister of Economics in autumn 2005 and that he was not prepared for the task: “At the time, I didn't even know exactly where this Economics Ministry was. I even lived nearby but never cared. I had little idea what the duties of this ministry are, what it has to take care of. "
Other engagement
Glos is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group of the German Bundestag and the board of trustees of the Young Leaders Initiative Germany-Russia - The New Generation . While he was chairman of the CSU regional group, he was the curator of the New Social Market Economy Initiative .

Michael Glos is Catholic, married and has two children.
