Helmut Haussmann (born May 18, 1943 in Tübingen ) is a German politician ( FDP ). From 1988 to 1991 he was Federal Minister of Economics .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1961, Haussmann studied economics and social sciences in Tübingen , Hamburg and Nuremberg . In 1968 he finished his studies with a diploma . He then worked as a managing partner at his father's company, Berninger & Spilcke KG in Bad Urach . In 1971 he changed to the chair for corporate management at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as a research assistant. In 1975 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. with the work corporate order and self-determination . Since 1991 he has been with the management consultancy Capgemini . In 1996 he was appointed honorary professor for international management at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Since 2010 he has been an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tübingen.

Helmut Haussmann is married to Margot Haussmann.

Political career

Haussmann is a member of the FDP . From 1975 to 1987 he was FDP district chairman in Reutlingen . From 1975 to 1980 Haussmann was a member of the Bad Urach municipal council , where he also lives.

From 1976 to 2002 he was a member of the German Bundestag . Helmut Haussmann was last drawn into the German Bundestag (14th electoral term in 1998) via the Baden-Württemberg state list. In the federal election in 2002 , he missed the renewed leap into the Bundestag for a place on the list because the Baden-Württemberg FDP, contrary to the federal trend, had to accept a loss of votes.

From June 1, 1984 to October 8, 1988 he was General Secretary of the FDP. When Martin Bangemann became EU Commissioner, Haussmann was appointed as Federal Minister of Economics in the Federal Government led by Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl on December 9, 1988 . During the process of German reunification, Haussmann warned against hasty steps, while the Chancellor and the Finance Minister wanted to quickly introduce the Deutsche Mark in East Germany. The Treaty on Economic and Monetary Union was therefore mainly drawn up in the Ministry of Finance. After the federal election in 1990 , Haussmann resigned from the federal government on January 18, 1991.

In the European elections in 1999 , Haussmann was the FDP top candidate .

Other engagement

Haussmann was Deputy Chairman from 1979 to 1982 and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom since 1982 .
