Ignaz Kiechle

Ignaz Kiechle (born February 23, 1930 in Reinharts / Sankt Mang ; † December 2, 2003 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) was a German politician ( CSU ). From 1983 to 1993 he was Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forestry .

Life and work

After attending elementary school, Kiechle completed an agricultural apprenticeship and then a six-month agricultural internship as part of the Marshall Plan in the USA . After his return he attended the agricultural college from 1949 to 1952. In 1960 he passed the master's examination and has been training apprentices ever since. From 1958 to 1968 he managed his parents' farm.

Ignaz Kiechle was with Cäcilia Kiechle, geb. Räth, married and had four children. His son Thomas Kiechle is involved in local politics and has been the mayor of the city of Kempten (Allgäu) for the CSU since 2014 . His daughter Andrea runs AVA-Agrarverlag Allgäu GmbH in Kempten, which publishes various magazines, e.g. B. "The beautiful Allgäu" and the " Allgäuer Bauernblatt ". His daughter Manuela belonged from 2011 to 2017 the party executive of the CSU and is ill-board of the Bavarian Insurance Chamber .

Political party

Since 1953 Kiechle was a member of the CSU . From 1971 to 1984 he was chairman of the working group for agriculture of the CSU. From 1972 to 1982 he was chairman of the CSU district association of the Oberallgäu district . From 1980 to 1997 he was a member of the CSU party executive.

From 1966 to 1972 Ignaz Kiechle was a member of the parish council of Sankt Mang and the district council of Kempten .

From 1969 to 1994 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1976 to 1982 he chaired the working group for food, agriculture and forestry of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. From October 1982 to March 1983 he was also deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. Most recently (12th electoral period in 1990) Kiechle was directly elected member of the Oberallgäu Bundestag constituency with 58.1% of the votes .

Public offices

After the general election in 1983 , he was on 30 March 1983 as a Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Forestry in by Chancellor Helmut Kohl led government appointed. One of his greatest tasks as Minister of Agriculture was the Europe-wide introduction of the milk quota in order to be able to prevent “milk lakes” and “ butter mountains ”, which was implemented in 1984. At first the resistance was enormous and connected with personal attacks, which Ignaz Kiechle did not let himself be put off. When the quota expired in the early 1990s, it was extended in silent unanimity, first to 2000, then to March 31, 2015.

As Minister of Agriculture, Ignaz Kiechle also maintained a policy of friendship and cooperation with agriculture ministers in Eastern Europe. In 1987 he visited the GDR and met with his GDR counterpart Bruno Lietz . At the 24th General Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO in Rome in November 1987, Ignaz Kiechle and Alexi Ivanov, Minister for Agriculture and Forests of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, agreed on a Bulgarian-German investment program for agriculture.

honors and awards

Ignaz Kiechle was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Bavarian Order of Merit , in 1985 with the Bavarian Order of Beer, in 1993 with the Ernst Reuter plaque , the gold pin of honor for services to agricultural social security, the Andreas Hermes Medal of German Farmers' Association , and the Golden Citizen Medal of the City of Kempten (Allgäu) . He also received the Great Gold Medal of Honor on Ribbon of the Republic of Austria , in France the order “Pour le Mérite Agrar” and the order “del Merito Agrario” in Spain.
