Paul Krüger (born March 7, 1950 in Güstrow ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was Federal Minister for Research and Technology from 1993 to 1994 and Lord Mayor of Neubrandenburg from 2001 to 2015 .

education and profession

The son of a farmer and a housewife completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator in Neubrandenburg from 1966 to 1968 after attending the Polytechnic Oberschule (POS) in Roggow . In this profession he worked in Teterow and Warnemünde until 1969 . In 1969 he began studying mechanical engineering at the engineering college in Wismar , which he completed in 1975 with a degree in engineering . He had been working as an engineer since 1973, and from 1980 as a group leader for organization and software development in a mechanical engineering company in Neubrandenburg. In 1986 he received his doctorate as Dr.-Ing. in Wismar with the work of construction technology production preparation .

Political party

He has been a member of the CDU since 1989 (the GDR until 1990 ). In 1990 he was elected to the CDU district executive of Neubrandenburg and the CDU state executive of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . From 2003 until his retirement in 2017, Krüger was deputy state chairman of his party in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

From March to October 1990, Krüger was a member of the first freely elected People's Chamber of the GDR for constituency 11 (Neubrandenburg) . He was a member of the Executive Committee and First Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU / DA - faction . On October 3, 1990, he became a member of the German Bundestag , to which he belonged until his resignation on August 14, 2001. From March to May 1993 he was chairman of the Treuhandanstalt working group in the Bundestag . From 1994 to 1998 he was deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and from 1998 to 2001 chairman of the committee for the affairs of the new states .

Public offices

May 13, 1993 Paul Kruger was the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl as Federal Minister for Research and Technology in the Federal Government appointed. After the federal election in 1994 , however, his ministry was merged with the Federal Ministry of Education and Science to form the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology , and Jürgen Rüttgers took over the management. Krüger therefore resigned from the federal government on November 17, 1994.

In 2001, Krüger stood as a proposal from the CDU for the election of mayor of the city of Neubrandenburg. In the main election he received 47.7 percent of the vote. The following runoff election on May 6, 2001 he won against the PDS candidate Torsten Koplin with 65.3 percent of the vote and became the first directly elected Lord Mayor of Neubrandenburg. In the mayoral election in 2008 he was confirmed in his office; in the main election on May 18, 2008, he won 26.8 percent of the votes as the first-placed candidate; in the runoff election on June 1, 2008, he prevailed against the individual applicant Hans-Joachim Schröder with 52.3 percent of the votes. In March 2015, he retired at the age of 65.
