Federal Minister and criticism

On March 14, 2018, Anja Karliczek was appointed Federal Minister for Education and Research in the Merkel IV cabinet. According to her own statement, the appointment surprised her. Der Spiegel and other media suspect that she got the office because "because she is a woman and Catholic - and comes from North Rhine-Westphalia". According to her own statement, she would like to counter her own unfamiliarity with the subject - Karliczek has so far mainly dealt with questions of financial policy - by "asking the right questions."

In June 2018, Karliczek's statement was criticized in an interview with the journal Spektrum der Wissenschaft that she had found an article “What is an algorithm ?” In the newspaper supplement Prisma to be “helpful” because “many researchers and academics constantly use the terms of which they cannot imagine that they are not everyday life for others. And the others often don't even dare to ask. ”This was sometimes understood as if she had only understood what algorithms were after reading the article.

Karliczek caused controversy in November 2018 with several controversial statements. In an interview with the broadcaster n-tv, for example, she criticized the way in which the decision to introduce same-sex marriage was brought about in Germany and explained the need for a long-term study on the development of children in homosexual partnerships. It is an “exciting research question” to “discuss this topic really long term”. This demand led to strong criticism, since these studies have been available in extensive quantities for a long time.

With regard to the expansion of the 5G mobile communications standard , Karliczek told the FAZ that 5G was “not necessary on every milk jug ”, and explained: “We now need basic 4G equipment ”. For this she was u. a. criticized by the German Farmers' Association , Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner and the later party chairman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (both also CDU) and Digital State Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU).

The Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) criticized Karliczek's plans to introduce new designations for professional qualifications with the titles “professional specialist”, “professional bachelor” and “professional master”. There is a risk that “these terms would be confused with university degrees,” said HRK President Peter-André Alt . Graduation designations should be "transparent and unambiguous" and should "not lead to confusion".

In February 2019, she replied in an interview with Der Spiegel that the planned increase in the flat-rate housing allowance from 250 to 325 euros for student loans in cities like Hamburg, Cologne or Munich will hardly be enough for a room: “You don't have to go to the most expensive cities go. "

Karliczek said that every technological progress should be ranked behind the Christian image of man.

In June 2019, the Ministry of Research led by Karliczek decided to fund a research center for battery development in Münster with 500 million euros. Karliczek was accused of choosing Münster because the city is in close proximity to its constituency, Ibbenbüren.

During the Corona pandemic in 2020 was Karliczek criticized for that they are against a student loan uttered -Öffnung for students whose part-time jobs were dropped because of the pandemic. In a letter to the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs , she justified her rejection by saying that the parliamentary legislative process required for this was taking too long. You don't have that time. Green politician Kai Gehring commented: "Karliczek wants to see students who are financially at the end of their lives because of the corona."
