Kai Gehring (born December 26, 1977 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ), social scientist and member of the German Bundestag.

Life and work

After graduating from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Velbert in 1997 , Gehring did his community service at the Evangelical Student Community (ESG) in Essen and, from 1998, studied social sciences at the Ruhr University in Bochum , which he graduated in 2003 as a social scientist (Dipl.-Soz.-Wiss.) Finished. His residence is in Essen-Rüttenscheid and he lives in a same-sex partnership.

Political party

Gehring became a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in 1998 and was one of the co-founders of the State Association of Green Youth (GJ) in North Rhine-Westphalia , of which he was a spokesperson from 1999 to 2002 and from 2000 to 2002. From 2002 to 2006 he was also a member of the state board of the green state association of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2015 he has been one of the two chairmen of the Essen district association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. He is also a regular delegate to state and federal party conferences (LDK / BDK) and in the Ruhr district association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

MP

He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2005 and has entered the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2005 to 2011 he was the spokesman for youth and university policy in the Bundestag parliamentary group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. From June 2011 to September 2013 he was spokesman for education and higher education policy in the parliamentary group. Gehring has been the spokesperson for research, science and universities since October 2013. He is the chairman of his parliamentary group in the committee for education, research and technology assessment and a deputy member of the budget committee, as well as the sub-committee for foreign cultural and educational policy. Since 2018 he has also been a member of the Committee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid and the Board of Trustees of the Federal Agency for Civic Education. In addition, he is a member of various parliamentary bodies and groups and is vice-chairman of the parliamentary group for Central Africa and the Arabic-speaking countries of the Near and Middle East.

Gehring is a member of the board of trustees of the German Student Union , the board of trustees of the Federal Agency for Civic Education , the board of trustees of Aktion Deutschland hilft , and the board of trustees of the Evangelisches Studienwerk e. V. Villigst, on the advisory board for the study work of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and in the Green Academy of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. He is also a member of the Senate of the Leibniz Association and deputy chairman of the Advisory Board of the FernUniversität Hagen .
