Wilhelm's cry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wilhelmsschrei ( Wilhelm scream ) is a sound effect from a commercial sound library , the scream of a person that has been used in numerous films. The scream, first used in 1951 in the film The Devil's Brigade ( Distant Drums ), is one of the well-known sound clichés, along with a certain recording of an eagle's scream.

history

The Wilhelmsschrei

After the first use of the sound in the film , the devil brigade , in which a man is eaten by an alligator, ejects the cry, the sound effect has been used in several films, for example, in The burning arrow (engl. The Charge at Feather River , 1953), Formicula (1954), Toy Story (1995), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (film) (2002) and The Simpsons (2010, episode 452). It is said to have been used in over 400 other films.

The name of the sound effect is derived from the supporting character Wilhelm in the film The Burning Arrow , who utters the scream when he is hit by an arrow. Ben Burtt , the sound designer for Star Wars , assumed that the Wilhelmsschrei was used for the first time in this film.

The use of the sound effect in Star Wars was the prelude to an insider or job-specific running gag of the sound designers. Especially at Skywalker Sound , later also by other sound designers, the cry was quoted in numerous films. As a gag in a gag, the use in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is to be described, in which the supporting character who utters the scream is eaten by crocodiles , as in The Devil's Brigade .

The Wilhelmsschrei also appears in video games . For example, you can hear him in GTA V , Red Dead Redemption , SWAT 4 or in Darksiders fighting the Stygian.

Sheb Wooley is considered by many to be the most likely voice for the Wilhelmsschrei.
