action

In Darksiders you take on the role of "War", one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The final battle between heaven and hell has broken out on earth. When war comes to earth to fulfill its duty, it is accused of having sided with the underworld and thus sparked the apocalypse prematurely. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse are a kind of reaction force of the Fiery Council, an authority between the heavenly realm, earth and hell for the maintenance of the laws. The horsemen are supposed to maintain the balance of powers, but are only allowed to intervene in the event of a war if the seven seals of the Apocalypse have been broken, but these are apparently intact. War protests his innocence before the Fiery Council and offers to uncover the real background of this conspiracy or to die trying. The council finally agrees and equips war with the bloodthirsty sword "Chaos Eater". In order to keep him under control during his mission, a demonic observer is imposed on Krieg, who can subdue him if necessary and is supposed to ensure that the will of the council is followed by the rider. Almost completely disempowered, he is sent back to earth. 100 years have now passed; mankind did not survive this time. His campaign of revenge begins in post-apocalyptic New York.

Characters

war

War is the second of the four horsemen of the apocalyptic. He, his brothers Death and Strife and his sister Anger, are the heralds of the approaching Apocalypse. However, war is sent to earth without its siblings and must now alone prove its innocence.

ruin

War Horse will only become available towards the middle of the game after War kills a demon who has taken possession of the horse in an arena. As long as War rides on ruin, his weapon choices and skills are limited, but his pace increases and his sword fighting attacks gain significantly in strength. Ruin is not immediately ready to be ridden by war, but attacks it first, but the latter refuses to injure the horse.

Samael

Samael is a demon of terrible power and distorted beauty. He did not accept the rule of the destroyer and was therefore imprisoned forever. From that moment all his thoughts are only concerned with revenge. You don't see what happens to him in the end. He offers war to help him with his mission, but demands the hearts of four powerful demons.

Vulgrim

Vulgrim is a demon and at the same time the traveling merchant. Vulgrim is a hell demon, but remains neutral during war and offers his goods to anyone who is willing to pay for them. He uses snake holes to move around the ruined earth. Later on, the player can use these snake holes himself.

Ulthan

Ulthan is one of the ancients or creators . He has a unique perspective on the endless machinations of heaven and hell - he doesn't give a damn about it. For a short time the master armourer helps war by making the weapon grace for him .

Tiamat

Tiamat is a demon in the shape of a giant bat. War must kill her, tear her heart away and then bring it to Samael.

The tormentor

The tormentor is a cancerous demon who sends swarms of insects from holes in her back and deals powerful blows with her lance-like arms. She too must defeat war and tear out her heart.

Stygian

Stygian is a demon in the shape of a worm. War has to kill him because he needs his heart.

Silitha

Silitha is a spider-like demon. Many unhappy beings find themselves in their tangled webs. She takes great pleasure in breaking bones with her fangs, but sometimes Silitha preserves her captives to better enjoy her creeping agony. War also has to wrest her heart from her.

Straga

Straga is the general of the demons during the apocalypse. He is also the strongest of the Destroyer's Chosen. He kills war in the game's prologue. War encounters him again later in the game.

Abaddon

Abaddon led the heavenly army in the first hours of the apocalypse, until war briefly distracted him and the demon Straga could destroy him. It later turns out that Abaddon has mutated into the destroyer, the leader of all demons, whereupon War kills him in the final battle.

Game principle and technology

As in many similar games, war has some basic skills such as B. jumping, climbing, diving, fighting, dangling and blocking. However, it is also important for war that it increases its abilities by absorbing the souls of the defeated opponents. They leave souls of different colors behind, which top up his health (green), his anger account (yellow) and his currency (blue). Blue souls can implement war with the traveling merchant Vulgrim, who offers war new skills, equipment, special attacks and items in exchange for these treasures.

Special attacks can also be expanded in different strengths, which ensures a decent performance boost, especially with anger attacks. These can only be used when War's Wrath Gauge is charged, which is done by special potions or killing enemies. Anger abilities are particularly powerful attacks that usually inflict enormous damage on all enemies in the vicinity, but war loses some of its anger energy in return. Another skill that requires a charge is the Chaos Form. Once war has gathered enough chaos energy, it can transform itself into a powerful demon, which almost no one has to counter.

War finds various weapons and items throughout the game. The wings, for example, allow him to glide a short distance and shoot up in the presence of air currents. With the help of a cross blade he can target several opponents or operate switches from a distance. Weapons reach a higher level and gain power through use. In addition, special items can be linked to weapons and expand their properties. So the gain of anger points is increased or the level of the weapon increases faster.

The actual game is divided into combat and puzzle tasks. In order to be able to survive its adventure successfully, war must not only defeat opponents, but also explore areas and dungeons and solve puzzles so that the path can be further developed and it can advance into other areas. War must z. B. Overcome obstacles, open locked doors with a mechanism and find hidden chests with keys.

He can also expand his anger with anger cores, which can also be found in chests. One can also find life extensions that increase wartime life. If Krieg finds artifacts, he can also sell them to Vulgrim for souls. However, the artifacts do not all bring in the same number of souls, because there are different "levels" in which they are arranged and the higher the level, the better the price. You can also find the Abyssal Armor in chests, which consists of ten parts. Most items can not only be found in dungeons, but also in the world outside of dungeons, as this is freely accessible.

Production notes

Originally, developer Vigil Games had plans to develop the game with a four-player co-op mode. Each player would have taken on the role of one of the four horsemen of the apocalyptic. However, since the team did not have much console experience and had not previously developed any action adventures, the decision was made to use the less risky solution of a single player title. The game is also known as Darksiders - Wrath of War . The originally planned subtitle was dropped with the release of the game.

Currently under the direction of is Nordic Games , a Linux - porting created by Darksiders.

Darksiders 2

In March 2011, THQ confirmed that a successor is being planned, which should be published in the 2012 financial year. The player takes on the role of Tod, one of the brothers of Krieg. Since there is only one apocalypse, according to Danny Bilson, the vice-president of THQ, the second part will play at the same time as Darksiders. The game mechanics should also change somewhat due to basic features that differ significantly from the first part. Darksiders 2 was released on August 17th, 2012 and, unlike its predecessor, was released by the USK for ages 16 and up. In 2015, as already presented at GamesCom, a revised version of Darksiders 2 called Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition will be released for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and PC. In addition to improved graphics and higher resolution, this will include all previously released DLCs.

Darksiders 3

The development of the third part was officially confirmed in May 2017. Darksiders III developed by Gunfire Games was released on November 27, 2018 for Windows, Xbox One and Playstation 4. A large part of the development team has already worked on Darksiders 2 . In the third part, the player takes on the role of the battle mage Fury. The game is published by THQ Nordic . The genre is not very much inspired by its predecessors and is essentially a Metroidvania .

Darksiders Genesis

The game was released for Stadia and Windows in December 2019, and for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in February 2020. The game is now played from a different perspective, because unlike its predecessors, you play it from a bird's eye view, similar to Diablo . The player even slips into two roles, on the one hand that of the well-known rider War (war) and on the other hand that of the new rider Strife (dispute).
