Lists on the subject

The .32-20 WCF cartridge (.32-20 Winchester Center Fire) produced from 1882 , like the .44-40-WCF and the .38-40-WCF cartridge, was made for the Winchester Mod. 73 rifle developed. Like the larger-caliber cartridges, it was a powerful centerfire cartridge for its time . In 1895 Winchester launched a smaller relative of the .32-20, the .25-20 Winchester with a cartridge case based on the .32-20 and adapted to the smaller caliber.

history

For the .32-20 WCF cartridge in caliber .313 (7.95 mm), a case the same length as the .44 case was used, but it had a smaller diameter and was tapered at the front. The 100 grain bullet had about the same muzzle velocity as the larger cartridges. When firing the cartridge with the rifle, the recoil was hardly noticeable, with the revolver it was much lower, which allowed faster shooting. Like its bigger sisters, it was originally intended for the Winchester Mod. 73 rifle , but Winchester later launched other models for the .32-20.

From 1887 Colt also manufactured the Single Action Army in this caliber, and in 1888 the Colt Model 1878 Double Action followed . Both Colt and Smith & Wesson also produced revolvers with a swing-out drum for this cartridge, which is suitable for sport shooting, until recently.

The Colt Lightning front bolt action rifle was also available in .32-20 caliber. Other manufacturers were Marlin with lever action rifles and Remington with the rolling block single loader. After the turn of the century, the cartridge was also loaded with smokeless powder and used for hunting small game. With the "Model 1892" developed by John Browning , Winchester launched a lever action rifle that was also suitable for firing smokeless cartridges.

In the case of the .32-20 cartridges with smokeless powder used by Winchester, the external ballistic data of the black powder cartridges were initially retained, but later the load was increased. Production ceased in 1937, but resumed after the war with the advent of cowboy action shooting .

Modern ammunition

Modern .32-20 WCF cartridges

100 Grains bullets fired from rifle barrels reach a muzzle velocity of 1290 ft / s (394 m / s) and have practically the same trajectory as the .44-40 WCF cartridge up to a range of 200 m. From a 6 "turret, it is 1030 ft / s (314 m / s).

Winchester-Western offers cartridges under the designation .32-20 HV (High Velocity) with an 80-grain bullet and a muzzle velocity of 2100 ft / s (641 m / s).

Self-loaded .32-20 cartridges are used for gunpowder shooters and cowboy action shooting because of their smoke development and weak recoil.

Modern smokeless .32-20 ammunition may only be fired in Colt Single Action Army revolvers with the VP test mark (in triangular shape) on the trigger guard.
