The .25-20 Winchester cartridge, produced from 1895 onwards, was initially developed as a black powder cartridge for the Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle .

history

For the .25-20 Winchester centerfire ammunition in caliber .258 (6.6 mm), a sleeve of the same length as that of the .44-40 WCF and the .32-20 WCF -Patrone used. It had the diameter of the .32-20 and was tapered at the front ( bottle neck sleeve ). The 86 grain bullet had a slightly higher muzzle velocity than the .32-20 with a 20 grain gunpowder charge. When firing the cartridge with the rifle, the recoil was barely noticeable, which allowed faster firing.

After the turn of the century, the cartridge was also loaded with smokeless powder and used for hunting small game. In addition to the "Model 1892" developed by John Browning , Winchester and other suppliers brought out a whole range of hunting weapons for this cartridge.

Modern ammunition

86-grain bullets fired from rifle barrels reach a muzzle velocity of 1460 ft / s (445 m / s) and have a flatter trajectory than the .32-20 WCF cartridge up to a range of 200 m. Source: Ballistics of Winchester Western cartridges, Form 157, cartridge designation W25201, W25202 .
