Notes on the list:

Rifle ammunition

Rifle ammunition in inches

This information is mainly used in the Anglo-American language area. The nominal caliber is given in decimal fractions of an inch (2.54 cm). .50 therefore corresponds to 0.50 × 2.54 cm = 1.27 cm; .30 the popular 7.62 mm (0.762 cm) caliber. Another point is added to distinguish between different cartridges with the same diameter. For example, the .308 Winchester cartridge (= 7.62 × 51 mm) is not intended for barrels in the calculated caliber 0.308 × 2.54 cm = 0.7823 cm, but the number 8 is used to distinguish it from other cartridges in the 7.62 caliber mm.

Organizations: testing, standardization, documentation

Internationally, several organizations are involved in the testing, approval, specification and documentation of cartridges for firearms. In particular, these are the firing offices of the states of the European Union and other states whose informal umbrella organization is the CIP ( Commission Internationale Permanente pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives ) ( Permanent International Commission for Firearms Testing ). In Germany, each ammunition lots tested with up to 3,000 cartridges. In the USA, the SAAMI ( Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute ), as a non-governmental, manufacturing organization, is engaged in similar tasks.

Multiple designations and assignment schemes

Because of the frequent multiple names of cartridges, different codes have been established to identify certain cartridges. This can best be shown for a cartridge as an example:

.45 Colt
.45 Long Colt
.45 Long Colt Double Action
.45 Long Colt DA
.45 Colt Army Double Action
.45 Colt Long
.45 Colt USA
.45-40-250 Colt revolver
SAA 7690
EB 430
(11.43 × 33 R)
XCR 11 032 CBC 020

All of the above designations mean one and the same cartridge, the multiple designations have arisen historically and indicate different loads and manufacturers of the cartridge.

  • Manufacturer cartridge names are adopted by CIP for approval.
  • SAA names are names of the SAAMI
  • Metric designations enable the cartridges to be compared and assigned
  • XCR The European Cartridge Research Association (ECRA) has defined the XCR coding (XCR stands for E x tended C heinisse R egenstreif Code) for cartridges, with the help of which each cartridge can be clearly assigned a code. However, this system is complicated and not widely used. In addition, many different variants such as drill, exercise, propellant, observation, tool, buffer cartridges etc. are known for the 8 × 57 IS cartridge under the XCR code 08-057-BGC-110.
