Lists on the subject |
The .50 Action Express is a cartridge with the caliber 12.7 mm (0.5 inches ). It was developed for use in handguns , the most famous weapon in .50 Action Express being the Desert Eagle self-loading pistol .
history
The cartridge was developed in 1988 by Evan Whildren of Action Arms for the Desert Eagle . Sales began in 1991. The .50 Action Express was designed for hunting and target shooting.
technology
The bottom of the cartridge is identical to that of the .44 Magnum . This makes it possible to fire the cartridge only by exchanging the barrel from a Desert Eagle set up for .44 Magnum. The diameter of the cartridge case is 13.9 mm (0.547 inches ). This ammunition is mainly used in handguns, but also in some long guns.
Performance assessment
Fired from a Desert Eagle with a 152 mm barrel, the muzzle velocity of the almost 20 g (300 grain) bullet is 400 m / s with a muzzle energy of around 1700 joules . If the cartridges are reloaded , these values can be exceeded with a stronger propellant charge . The .50 Action Express is thus the most powerful cartridge for self-loading pistols on the market. In handguns, their ballistic performance is only surpassed by a few revolver cartridges such as the .454 Casull or the .500 S&W .
