history

The .454 Casull cartridge was developed by Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer in 1957. It is based on the .45 Colt cartridge , whose case has been lengthened and reinforced for this purpose. For revolvers in caliber .454 Casull and .45 Colt cartridges can be fired.

The .454 Casull was developed as a cartridge for hunting. The default was u. a. that the cartridge from the specially designed revolver from the Freedom Arms Mod. 83 brand, which can be carried easily (up to 1500 grams) on the belt for a long period of time, provides the highest performance, which is why barrel lengths over 7.5 inches there is also no more significant increase in energy.

Up to 7.5 inches, it only has to admit defeat to the .500 S&W Magnum, which, however, can only be fired from revolvers, which are significantly heavier and larger due to the long cartridge and are no longer considered "hunted".

Further development

The newer .460 S&W Magnum cartridge was again created by lengthening the case of the .454 Casull, so that .454 Casull and .45 Colt cartridges can also be loaded into .460 S&W caliber revolvers. The .454 Casull cartridge outperforms that of the newer .50 Action Express cartridge , and with a comparable barrel length of up to 7.5 inches, it is also superior to the .460 cartridges (which can only show their performance at barrel lengths over 10 inches), But the .500 S&W Magnum has to admit defeat.
