Arthur Geoffrey Dickens
Arthur Geoffrey Dickens (born July 6, 1910 in Kingston upon Hull , Yorkshire , † July 31, 2001 in London ) was an English historian.
Life
Dickens studied Medieval and Modern History at Oxford University . During the Second World War he served in the Royal Artillery of the British Army and, as a good expert on Germany, became one of the three press officers of the British military government in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in mid-May 1945 . He kept a diary about his time there, which is one of the most important local sources of history for the summer of 1945 in Lübeck and the British Zone . At the beginning of October 1945 he returned to England and taught history at the local University of Hull from 1949 to 1962 . In 1962 he was appointed to a chair in history at King's College London . His historical focus was the history of the 16th century and the Reformation in England ; The English Reformation is considered the standard work on this subject. Dickens was a fellow of the British Academy . In 1976 he played a key role in the founding of the German Historical Institute in London and in 1980 received the Federal Cross of Merit .
