Georg Spohr (born January 24, 1951 in Magdeburg ) is a former helmsman in rowing from the GDR. In 1976 and 1980 Spohr was Olympic champion in two with helmsman .

Life

In the fall of 1975 Harald Jahresling and Friedrich-Wilhelm Ulrich formed a new pair. With a competition weight of 47 kg, Spohr, who was only 1.48 m tall, was the helmsman. The rowers from SC Magdeburg were able to prevail in the 1976 Olympic qualification against the reigning Olympic and world champions Wolfgang Gunkel and Jörg Lucke . At the 1976 Olympic Games , Jahresling, Ulrich and Spohr were clearly superior and won with almost three seconds ahead of the Soviet boat.

At the 1977 World Cup, the boat finished second behind the Bulgarian boat. After that yearling and Ulrich switched to the GDR eighth and became world champions with eighth. Georg Spohr also became world champion when he drove the two of Jürgen Pfeiffer and Gert Uebeler from Halle in 1979 . For the 1980 Olympic Games , Jahresling, Ulrich and Spohr reunited. They won the Olympic regatta just ahead of the Soviet boat.

In 1976 and 1980 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit for his Olympic victories.

In March 2020, the double Olympic and world champion Spohr was honored at the age of 69 with a “Walk of Fame” floor slab on the Magdeburg Sports Walk of Fame in his hometown on Breite Weg 28. The event took place in the presence of the mayor, the chairman of the city marketing "Pro Magdeburg" eV , as well as representatives of the sponsors and the SC Magdeburg.

Spohr is a trained telecommunications fitter, but worked in the film and photo department of SC Magdeburg .
