Giuseppe Abbagnale (born July 24, 1959 in Pompei ) is a former Italian rower and current rowing official. He won two Olympic gold medals and was a seven-time world champion.

Career

Giuseppe Abbagnale, together with his younger brother Carmine Abbagnale and the helmsman Giuseppe Di Capua, dominated the two-man competitions for over a decade . After Abbagnale had already been successful in this boat class in the Match des Seniors at the end of the 1970s , the trio dominated the world championships from 1981 to 1993 and won seven world titles, three further world championship medals and the Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988. At the Olympic Games in 1992 and at the World Championships in 1993, the three lost to the British brothers Jonathan Searle and Gregory Searle with their helmsman Garry Herbert . Abbagnale started in 1995 for the last time at the World Championships in the Italian eighth and finished 7th.

In addition to Giuseppe and Carmine Abbagnale, the youngest brother Agostino Abbagnale was also a successful rower who even won three Olympic gold medals. While the two older brothers always sat in the belt boat , Agostino was successful in the scull . In 2013, Giuseppe's son Vincenzo Abbagnale won his first world title in a two-man team.

Association presidency

In 2012 Abbagnale was elected President of the Italian rowing association “Federazione Italiana Canottaggio”. In his role as association president, he also had to pronounce a doping ban against his son Vincenzo.
