World Rowing Championships 1991

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1991 World Rowing Championships were held in Vienna , Austria . A new rowing center was built on the New Danube near the Steinsporn Bridge especially for these world championships, and it still serves as a training facility for rowers today. The route runs from south-east to north-west, which - without favoring a runway - is exactly in the main wind direction (mostly head wind, sometimes 180 ° opposite wind). The start area is in a nudist zone; at the World Championships have been the followers of nudism asked (FKK), not to run naked through the area.

In terms of sport, these World Rowing Championships were quite successful for the host country Austria, although gold was missing. In the years before, in 1989 in the lightweight double sculls by Walter Rantasa and Christoph Schmölzer in Bled (Slovenia) and in 1990 in the double sculls by Christoph Zerbst and Arnold Jonke in Tasmania , Austria had each brought home a world championship title. In Vienna there was “only” silver in the lightweight double scull from Rantasa and Schmölzer and bronze from Hermann Bauer and Karl Sinzinger in the double without a helmsman . The co-favorite Jonke and Zerbst were eliminated from the title race in the men's double scull in the semifinals.

At these world championships there was a joint German team for the first time since the German reunification , which was the strongest nation with 12 medals (seven of them in gold). One of the German winning boats was the four-man with helmsman , in a world record that has not been undercut to this day (as of 2017) .

The first Slovenian medal in two without a helmsman, immediately after the proclamation of independence for the later EU state, will also remain unforgettable. It was enthusiastically celebrated by Slovenian fans with flags and the fact that the successful athletes were thrown into the water.
