Martin Cross

Martin Patrick Cross (born July 19, 1957 in London ) is a British rower who won two Olympic medals.

Career

Martin Cross won the silver medal in the four without a helmsman at the Junior World Championships in 1975 . At the 1978 World Championships , the Soviet four-man without a helmsman won in front of the boat from the GDR, behind which Martin Cross, David Townsend , Ian McNuff and John Beattie received the bronze medal. In the same line-up, the British took third place at the 1979 World Championships , this time behind the boats from the GDR and the CSSR. The four Brits won their third bronze medal in a row at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow behind the boats from the GDR and the Soviet Union.

After a tenth place in the four without a helmsman at the World Championships in 1981 , Cross took sixth place in the double quad in 1982 and sixth in the four with a helmsman in 1983 . For this coxed four sat at the 1984 Olympics even Richard Budgett and Martin Cross in the boat, newly arrived Steve Redgrave , Andrew Holmes and helmsman Adrian Ellison . In this occupation, the British won the gold medal in front of the US boat and the New Zealanders.

At the 1985 World Championships , Martin Cross and Adam Clift rowed in two without a helmsman ; the two of them won the silver medal behind the Soviet brothers Nikolai and Yuri Pimenow . In 1986 , Clift and Cross took fourth place. At the Commonwealth Games in 1986, Clift and Cross won together with Redgrave, Holmes and Ellison in a four with helmsman. In 1987 Clift and Cross also competed at the World Championships in four-man with helmsman, together with John Maxey , John Garrett and helmsman Thomas Vaughan they finished fifth. In the same line-up, the British took fourth place at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

After a fourth place in the four without a helmsman at the 1990 World Championships , Martin Cross won the bronze medal with the British eighth at the 1991 World Championships . At the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1993 World Championships , Cross finished sixth in eighth place. Martin Cross finished his last start at major international championships with a seventh place in two with helmsman at the 1994 World Championships .

The 1.87 m tall Martin Cross started for the Thames Tradesmen's Rowing Club in Chiswick. He is a history teacher at Hampton School and also writes about rowing for the Guardian .
