Physically of robust stature, he began as a rower in the company's own sports club of Moto Guzzi. Two years later, in 1956, a boat from this sports club took part in the European championship in Bled in the four-man discipline : Franco Trincavelli and Romano Sgheiz outside, Alberto Winkler and Angelo Vanzin in the center and Ivo Stefanoni as the helmsman . They won bronze . That same year, on November 27th , the same boat won the gold medal at the Melbourne Olympics, ahead of Sweden , Finland and Australia .
