Viorel Talapan (born February 25, 1972 in Mihai Viteazu , Constanța County ) is a former Romanian rower who won two Olympic medals.

Athletic career

The 1.98 m tall Viorel Talapan won the bronze medal in a two-man team at the 1990 World Junior Championships together with Ciprien Badea and Gheorge Dinisel. At the 1991 World Championships , Talapan entered the adult class for the first time and took fourth place together with Iulică Ruican and Dumitru Răducanu in a pair with helmsman.

The next year Talapan reached the finals in two boat classes at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . On August 1, Iulică Ruican, Viorel Talapan, Dimitrie Popescu , Nicolae Țaga and helmsman Dumitru Răducanu won in a four with helmsman , on August 2, Ruican and Talapan with the Romanian eight won the silver medal behind the Canadian eight. At the 1993 World Championships , Talapan also won gold with the controlled foursome and silver with the eighth, in Indianapolis in 1994 he again won gold with the foursome and bronze with the eighth. After a fifth place with eighth at the 1995 World Championships , the Romanian eighth finished seventh at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . At the 1996 World Championships , Talapan won world championship gold for the third time with the four. In the following years Talapan only competed with eighth, he won silver at the 1997 World Championships and bronze at the 1998 World Championships . After fourth place at the 1999 World Championships , Talapan finished his career in sixth place at the 2000 Olympic Games in Atlanta with the Romanian eighth .
