Hans Maier (rower)

Hans Maier (born June 13, 1909 in Mannheim ; † March 6, 1943 on the Mareth Line in Tunisia ) was a German rower who took part in three Olympic Games and won two medals.

Hans Maier rowed at the Mannheim rowing club Amicitia from 1876 under the trainer Fritz Gwinner . From 1928 to 1931 the Mannheim eight won the German championship four times in a row. At the Olympic Games in 1928 , the eighth finished fifth. From 1929 to 1931 four rowers from the eighth also won the German championship in the four-man without a helmsman , alongside Hans Maier Karl Aletter and Ernst Gaber were there for all three years, while in 1931 Walter Flinsch took over the position of Hermann Herbold . Also at the 1932 Olympic GamesAletter, Gaber, Flinsch and Maier competed in a four and won the silver medal behind the British boat around Jack Beresford . In 1933 Karl Aletter, Ernst Gaber, Hans-Wolfgang Heidland and Hans Maier won the German championship again and, together with Karl Batz, took second place in the four with helmsman . Three years later, a Mannheim-Ludwigshafen racing team with Hans Maier, Walter Volle , Ernst Gaber, Paul Söllner ( Ludwigshafener RV ) and helmsman Fritz Bauer won the German championship title in a four-man. At the Olympic Games in 1936, the German boats won five of seven boat classes, including the four with a helmsman, who won eight seconds ahead of the boat from Switzerland.

Hans Maier was killed in the fighting on the Mareth Line in Tunisia during World War II .
