Life and work

Heidland grew up in Mannheim . After school he studied in Heidelberg, Tübingen and Zurich theology and a doctorate in Emil Brunner and Paul Schrenk . After his vicariate, he was the local pastor in Mannheim. As a rower , he took part in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, but could not qualify for the final with the eighth. During the Second World War he was a war pastor . After the war he took over a pastor's position in Heidelberg-Wieblingen and from 1947 was at the Heiliggeistkirche . He founded the men's association of the Evangelical Church in Baden and headed it for a year. From 1950 to 1951 he was acting director of the Evangelical Academy in Baden . In 1949 he was appointed to the Oberkirchenrat , which he initially belonged to until 1960. Then he was appointed professor for practical theology at Heidelberg University. At that time he was also a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Baden.

On September 14, 1964, the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Baden Heidland elected regional bishop and successor to Julius Bender , who had given up his office a few months earlier due to reasons of age. In 1975 he was made an honorary senator of the University of Karlsruhe .

After reaching the age of 68, Heidland retired. The regional synod therefore elected Klaus Engelhardt as his successor in October 1980 . Heidland then worked briefly as a pastor in Kandern . He died at the age of 79 and, at his own request, was quietly buried in close family circles.
