Karl Julius Holtzmann (born May 6, 1804 in Karlsruhe ; † February 23, 1877 there ) was a Protestant theologian and prelate of the Evangelical Church in Baden .

Life and work

Holtzmann was born in Karlsruhe as the son of Johann Michael Holtzmann, professor at the Lyceum, and his wife Christiane geb. Fetzer, who came from Württemberg, was born. There he attended elementary school and high school. At the age of 15 he lost his father. So he came to his maternal grandfather, Hofrat Fetzer, in Stuttgart . There he finished his high school and in 1821 moved to the theological monastery in Tübingen . There he finished his studies in theology with the first state examination in 1824 and then became vicar in Nonnenweier (today Schwanau ), then in Laufen, where he met his future wife, Adelheid Sprenger, the daughter of the pastor there, whom he met on July 12, 1831 got married. The couple had seven sons and one daughter.

In 1827 he entered the school service and became a teacher, later - like his father - a professor at the Lyceum in Karlsruhe. He held this office for 20 years. His subjects were religion, latin, and math. In 1847 he was able to practice his learned pastor's profession when he was appointed city pastor at the Heiliggeistkirche in Heidelberg . In addition to his pastoral activities, he also taught at various private schools and at the Heidelberg seminary. He also wrote several theological writings.

In 1861 Prelate Carl Christian Ullmann resigned, not least as a result of the introduction of the new agenda in the Baden regional church . The Grand Duke then named Holtzmann his successor. After the Baden regional church had previously been a department of the Ministry of the Interior, since 1843 with the designation "Evangelical Upper Church Council", it has now been made independent by the law of October 9, 1860 and the constitution of September 5, 1861. From then on it was a purely ecclesiastical authority, headed by the prelate (spiritual director) and a secular (with the exception of Albert Helbing ) director (from 1881 president) of the upper church council. State Councilor August Nüsslin held this office as early as 1860 . Holtzmann held his prelate office until his death on February 23, 1877. His successor was Karl Wilhelm Doll . Director Nüsslin held his office until 1881, his successor was Ludwig von Stösser, who was then called "President of the Upper Church Council" for the first time.

Honorary positions

The theological faculty of Heidelberg University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1856 .
