Karl Wilhelm Doll (born September 10, 1827 in Niefern, today Niefern-Öschelbronn , † February 25, 1905 in Achern ), was a Protestant theologian and prelate of the Evangelical Church in Baden .

Life and work

Doll was born in Niefern as the son of the local evangelical village pastor. He spent his childhood in neighboring Ellmendingen near Pforzheim , where he attended elementary school. After further schooling in Ludwigsburg , he attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe, where he graduated from high school in 1844. Then he studied theology and philosophy in Heidelberg and Berlin . He then attended the Heidelberg seminary, became vicar in Meißenheim in 1848 and in 1850 he was able to take up his first pastor's position in Schmieheim near Lahr . At that time he married Jenneth Rupp, the daughter of the pastor of Denzlingen. The couple had two daughters and a son. In 1854 he took over the management of the girls' school in Lahr, which is why he moved there. In addition to his teaching activities, he also preached in various congregations and in 1858 he was again a full-time pastor in Sand bei Kehl . Since his sermons were meanwhile receiving national attention, the Oberkirchenrat in Karlsruhe appointed him spiritual assessor in 1860. From 1862 he initially took over the position of court preacher in Karlsruhe for two years until this position was finally transferred to him in 1864. He thus resigned from the Oberkirchenrat. From then on, he was pastor of the grand ducal family for over four decades (later also in his role as prelate), to whom he also assisted in difficult times. In 1874, Grand Duke Friedrich I awarded him the title of "court preacher". During his tenure in Karlsruhe, his community grew steadily. His community members included the court employees, a large part of the top classes, but also a large number of the city's population. He knew how to provide pastoral support to all groups. He was considered a good preacher and was best known for visiting sick people.

When Prelate Karl Karl Julius Holtzmann died in 1877 , Doll was appointed his successor. He thus stood as spiritual director together with the director or president of the Upper Church Council, August Nüsslin (until 1881) and Ludwig von Stösser (from 1881), alongside the Grand Duke as "summus episcopus" at the head of the Baden regional church. With the office of prelate, Doll was also appointed court dean and pastor of the grand ducal house, a position he held until his death. He stayed for a long time on the island of Mainau in Lake Constance and in Baden-Baden Castle .

During his tenure as prelate, among other things, the preparation, elaboration and representation of the catechism of 1882 and the introduction of a new hymn book fell. From 1867 on, Doll was a member of the synod with a few interruptions. From 1876 to 1894 he was its vice-president. In 1895, Doll resigned his prelate office. His successor was Friedrich Wilhelm Schmidt . In 1901 his wife died. Doll died four years later at the age of 77.

Honorary positions

In addition to his full-time work, Doll also did volunteer work. He was active in numerous clubs and institutions. He was also a member of the Evangelical Church Committee.

The theological faculty of Heidelberg University awarded him an honorary doctorate . He also received the Grand Cross of the Zähringer Lion and several other medals.
