Ulrich Fischer (born February 11, 1949 in Lüneburg ) is a Protestant theologian and former regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden .

Life and work

Fischer grew up in Stelle , where he attended elementary school. He was involved early on in the church choir and trombone choir and was active in the Christian scouts . Later he attended the Johanneum in Lüneburg and the grammar school in Winsen (Luhe) , where he passed the Abitur. After completing his military service, he studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Göttingen and Heidelberg . In 1976 he received his doctorate with the thesis Studies on the eschatology of Hellenistic Diaspora Judaism , which later appeared under the title Eschatology and Expectation of the Beyond in Hellenistic Diaspora Judaism (BZNW 44, Berlin / New York 1978). From 1977 he was pastor in Sandhausen and Heidelberg-Kirchheim , before he took over the post of state youth pastor in Baden in 1989. From 1993 he held the office of chairman of the Working Group of Evangelical Youth in the Federal Republic of Germany (aej) for three years . In 1996, Fischer was elected Dean of the Mannheim Church District.

On July 25, 1997, the synod of the Evangelical Church in Baden elected Fischer in the fifth ballot to be regional bishop and successor to Klaus Engelhardt , who left office in spring 1998 due to old age. Fischer's inauguration was on March 31, 1998. As bishop, he waived two pay levels. From September 2000 Fischer was also chairman of the Arnoldshain Conference , which merged into the Union of Evangelical Churches (UEK) in 2003, was elected 1st chairman on October 18, 2003 in Erfurt and confirmed on May 1, 2009 in Würzburg for a further six years has been.

In October 2009, Fischer was elected to the EKD Council.

Fischer published some theological writings, including Confirmands Shaping Worship (1990), Worship Service Should Be Happy (1992) and Crazy Times (1995). He is a dedicated advocate of the sacrament for children.

He is also a member of the board of trustees of the ProChrist evangelical association . Fischer has been a member of BUND since 1996 and a member of the ethics committee for secure energy supply since March 2011 . Fischer is a member of the board of trustees of the Evangelical Office for Church Missionary Development and Diaconal Profile Building (midi) .

On June 1, 2014, Fischer resigned from the episcopate and retired. His successor as bishop of the Baden regional church was Jochen Cornelius-Bundschuh . In May 2015, the delegates' assembly in Schwerte elected him to succeed Axel Noack as the new chairman of the Missionary Services Working Group (AMD) of Diakonie Deutschland.

Private

Fischer has been married since 1973, has three grown daughters and lives in Neulußheim .
