Bernd Eichwurzel

Bernd Eichwurzel (born October 25, 1964 in Oranienburg ) is a former rower from the GDR. In 1988 Eichwurzel became Olympic champion in a four-man team .

Eichwurzel rowed for SG Dynamo Potsdam under coach Bernd Landvoigt . In 1982 he was junior world champion in two-man without a helmsman . In 1983 he started for the first time at the World Championship in the adult class. In the line-up of Bernd Eichwurzel, Bernd Niesecke , Jörg Friedrich , Dietmar Schiller and helmsman Klaus-Dieter Ludwig , the four took second place behind the boat from New Zealand. At the 1985 World Cup, the Potsdam four-man teamed up with Eichwurzel, Niesecke, Karsten Schmeling , Schiller and helmsman Hendrik Reiher and won the bronze medal.

In 1986 Frank Klawonn moved into the Potsdam four for Schiller. In the line-up of Karsten Schmeling, Bernd Niesecke, Bernd Eichwurzel, Frank Klawonn and Hendrik Reiher, the boat won the GDR championship in 1986 and 1988. The boat won the world championship title in 1986 in Nottingham and 1987 in Copenhagen. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, the four-man won almost three seconds ahead of the boat from Romania. In 1990 a team from the GDR competed for the last time at the World Cup, Mario Grüssel , Stefan Schulz , Detlef Kirchhoff , Bernd Eichwurzel and Hendrik Reiher won the title in the four with helmsman , the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany took second place.

Bernd Eichwurzel worked for the People's Police until the fall of the Berlin Wall , after which he worked as a driver. For his Olympic victory in Seoul he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold. He also received this award for the 1986 world title.
