Jake Wetzel

Jacob "Jake" Wetzel (born December 26, 1976 in Saskatoon ) is a former Canadian rower who competed for the United States in 1999 and 2000 . Wetzel won world championship titles in three different boat classes and received two Olympic medals.

Athletic career

The 1.95 m tall Wetzel began rowing in 1996 and was a member of the rowing team at the University of California, Berkeley from 1997 . In 1998 he competed in the Canadian eighth in the Rowing World Cup and at the 1998 World Rowing Championships together with Morgan Crooks he finished seventh in the two-man without helmsman .

In 1999 Wetzel was a member of the US national team and won the title at the World Championships in St. Catharines in a four with helmsman . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , he finished seventh with the US double foursome.

From 2003 Wetzel started again for the country in which he was born, who had paused in the intervening years due to an injury. With the Canadian four without a helmsman in the line-up Cameron Baerg , Thomas Herschmiller , Jake Wetzel and Barney Williams , he won the title at the 2003 World Championships in Milan ahead of the British. In the same line-up, the Canadian foursome won the silver medal behind the British at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

After a two-year break, Wetzel returned to the regatta courses in 2007 and won the gold medal at the World Championships in Munich with the Canadian eighth . In his last race, Wetzel won the 2008 Olympic Regatta in Beijing with the Canadian eighth .
