James Dunbar
James "Jim" Ralph Dunbar (born July 11, 1930 in Crawfordsville , Indiana , † May 14, 2018 in The Woodlands , Texas ) was an American rower .
James Dunbar was a cadet at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and a member of the academy's eighth . This eight was nominated for the 1952 Olympic Games . In Helsinki, the US eight reached the final undefeated, where he won with over five seconds ahead of the Soviet and Australian boats. It was the seventh consecutive Olympic victory for the American eighth since 1920.
In 1955, James Dunbar graduated from Annapolis and became an officer in the United States Air Force . He was a pilot of an F-105 Thunderchief and flew over 100 sorties in the Vietnam War . He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and ten times the Air Medal . He left the Air Force in the 1980s as a colonel.
