David Lindsay "Dave" Turner (born September 23, 1923 in Oakland , California , United States ; † June 26, 2015 in Jacksonville , Florida , United States) was an American rower and Olympic champion .

Life

David Turner rowed for the University of California, Berkeley . At the age of 25, he won the gold medal in rowing ( eighth ) with the US team at the 1948 Summer Olympics in Helsinki . His brother Ian also rowed on the same team. He later became a lieutenant and pilot in the United States Navy , where he served in the Korean War and Vietnam War and retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1969 . He then served as a civilian hurricane pilot with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and recorded most of a pilot's flights in the eye of a hurricane until he retired in 1993.
