Paul Steele

Paul Steele (born December 5, 1957 in New Westminster ) is a retired Canadian rower .

At the Pan American Games in Caracas in 1983 , the Canadian four-man with helmsman won the bronze medal in the line-up of Paul Steele, Ron Burak , Blair Horn , Nick Toulmin and helmsman Paul Tessier . In 1984 the Canadian eight competed with Blair Horn, Dean Crawford , Michael Evans , Paul Steele, Grant Main , Mark Evans , Kevin Neufeld , Patrick Turner and helmsman Brian McMahon . At the 1984 Olympic Games , the Canadians finished second behind the New Zealanders in the first run and qualified for the final with a second place behind the Australians in the hope run . In the final, the Canadians won with four tenths of a second ahead of the US eighth, while the Australians won the bronze medal two seconds behind the New Zealanders.

At the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Patrick Turner, Paul Steele, Kevin Neufeld and Grant Main won the four without a helmsman . Four weeks later they finished fourth at the World Rowing Championships in Nottingham . In 1987 the four rowers returned to the Canadian eight and finished fifth at the World Championships in Copenhagen . At the end of his career, Steele reached the 1988 Olympic final with the Canadian eighth and finished sixth in Seoul.

The 1.95 m tall Steele, a graduate of the University of British Columbia , was inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2003.
