Niels van Steenis

Niels Henning van Steenis (born November 3, 1969 in Groningen ) is a former Dutch rower . He became Olympic champion in 1996.

Niels van Steenis from Dare Devil Club Rotterdam took in 1987 with the quadruple sculls at the Junior World Championships in part, finishing in eighth place. In 1988 he was fifth in the same boat class at the unofficial U23 World Championships . From 1989 to 1991 he won three medals in the title fights in the U23 age group: 1989 silver with the four without a helmsman , 1990 bronze in the double quad and 1991 silver in the double scull .

In 1993 he took part with the Dutch eighth for the first time in the world championships in the adult class and finished fifth. At the World Championships in 1994 behind the USA and in 1995 behind the Germany eight, the Dutch eight won the silver medal. In 1996 the Dutch eighth won the pre-Olympic regattas in Duisburg and Lucerne quite clearly. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Dutch won clearly ahead of Germany eighth.
