Donald Johnston (rower)

Donald "Don" Hendrik Johnston (born September 30, 1899 in Albany , New York , † August 4, 1984 in Arlington County , Virginia ) was an American rower .

The 1.88 m tall Johnston had started rowing at the United States Naval Academy in 1919 , and in 1920 he was rowing in the Academy's first eight . This figure eight represented the United States at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp . The eighth won in the preliminary round with a lead of sixteen seconds against the Belgian team, in the semi-finals the Americans prevailed against the French crew with eighteen seconds. With a narrow margin of 0.8 seconds, the crew won the final ahead of the British eighth.

After his graduation, Johnston embarked on the career of an officer, in 1952 he left the US Air Force as a captain.
