Ansgar Wessling

Ansgar Wessling (born May 3, 1961 in Essen ) is a former German rower . He took part in the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 and became Olympic Champion in 1988. Since 1993 he has been the owner and managing director of Hörsysteme Wessling.

Athletic career

Ansgar Wessling rowed for the rowing team TVK Essen . He began rowing in 1974, but was active in the lightweight rowers. In 1983 he won the two without a helmsman together with Henning Schädla, and in 1984 he came second in the four without a helmsman at the World Championships in Montreal. It was not until 1985 that Wessling finally switched to the unrestricted weight class and in the first year together with Frank Evers became German champion in two-man without a helmsman. In 1987 Wessling drove to the world championships as a substitute rower. In 1988 Wessling rowed for the first time in Germany eighth under coach Ralf Holtmeyer . With Wolfgang Maennig , Thomas Möllenkamp , Matthias Mellinghaus , Eckhardt Schultz , Ansgar Wessling, Armin Eichholz , Thomas Domian , Schlagmann Bahne Rabe and helmsman Manfred Klein , the eighth won gold at the Olympic Games in Seoul.

At the 1989 World Rowing Championships in Bled, only Wessling and Klein were left from the gold eighth from 1988. In the line-up of Jörg Puttlitz , Norbert Keßlau , Martin Steffes-Mies , Dirk Balster , Frank Dietrich , Mark Mauerwerk , Ansgar Wessling, Roland Baar and Manfred Klein, the Germany eight won ahead of the eight from the GDR. In 1990 Wessling also retired from the eighth and rowed in the four-man with helmsman , with whom he was second behind the boat from the GDR at the World Championships in Tasmania. In 1991 Wessling returned to eighth. At the World Championships in Vienna, Martin Steffes-Mies, Dirk Balster, Claas-Peter Fischer , Jürgen Hecht , Thorsten Streppelhoff , Marc Mauerwerk, Ansgar Wessling, Roland Baar and Manfred Klein won the world championship for the third time in a row, with Steffes-Mies, Balster , Baar and Klein participated in all three successes. At the end of his career, Wessling took part in the 1992 Olympic Games , where the Germany eighth won bronze behind Canada and Romania.

On June 23, 1993, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements .

After his career as a rower, Ansgar Wessling took a sporting interest in motorsport and drove car races in the Porsche Sports Cup Germany between 2003 and 2008 . On October 3, 2008, he had a serious accident at the Hockenheimring, which he only barely survived, but from which he fully recovered.

Professional career

Ansgar Wessling is the son of a shoe manufacturer and trained first as an optician and then as a hearing care professional . In 1987 he completed his training and received his master craftsman's certificate in 1990 . In 1993 Wessling founded the first subsidiary of Hörsysteme Wessling in Essen-Rüttenscheid. After more than 20 years in business and the successful opening of a total of 12 branches throughout Essen (as of 2017), Ansgar Wessling is today, according to its own statements, the owner and managing director of the city's largest acoustician.
