Thomas Amlong

Thomas "Tom" Kennedy Amlong (born June 15, 1935 in Fort Knox , † January 26, 2009 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American rower .

He and his brother Joseph were members of the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia. In 1963 the Amlong brothers took second place in Henley in a double . At the 1964 Olympic Games , the Vesper Boat Club was the first club to place the US eighth and not a university. The US eight was an outsider against the favored Germany eight . The two boats met in the first run and the Germany eight won with a lead of 0.28 seconds. In the final, the US boat won by over five seconds.

Like his brother, Thomas Amlong continued his military career after his sporting career.
