Eric Johannesen (born July 16, 1988 in Oberhausen ) is a German rower . In 2011 he became world champion and 2012 Olympic champion in eighth place .

Career

Johannesen started rowing in 2002. In 2005 he was junior world champion in a four-man with helmsman , in 2006 he finished in eighth place at the junior world championships . In 2008 Johannesen won the world regatta in the U23 age group in the double quad, and in 2009 the German double quad took fifth place in the U23 World Championships . In 2010, he and Sebastian Peter finished second in the double scull at the U23 World Championships.

Also in 2010, Johannesen started at the open world championships together with Andreas Kuffner in a two-man without a helmsman and finished fifth. In 2011, Kuffner and Johannesen moved up in the Germany eighth , with which they won the German championship title and the World Cup regattas in Munich and Lucerne, in between the two competed with Richard Schmidt and Kristof Wilke at the World Cup in Hamburg in a four-man without a helmsman and also won in this boat class. The Germany eight won the World Championships in Bled , and the following year the Germany eight with Johannesen won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Also in the new Olympic cycle, Johannesen was a constant member of the Germany eight squad from 2013, which has had a strong new permanent rival in the British selection. In the years 2013 to 2016, the German team won the gold medal at the European Championships. In the World Cup finals, however, the boat from the United Kingdom was three times faster, so that Eric Johannesen won the silver medal with the Germany eighth. In the finals of the 2016 Olympic Games , the finish line was the same as in the World Championships 2013 to 2015, behind the British, the rowers of the Germany eight received the silver medal.

For this, he and the team of eight received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Gauck on November 1, 2016 .

At the European Championships in 2013 , Johannesen led the eighth as batsman.

The 1.93 meter tall sports soldier started for the Rowing Club Bergedorf until 2017 , then for the Rowing Club Favorite Hammonia . His brother Torben Johannesen was a substitute at the 2016 Olympic Games.
