Hans Lenk (philosopher)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Lenk (born March 23, 1935 in Berlin ) is professor emeritus at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Karlsruhe ( KIT ) and Olympic champion in rowing.

Life

After graduating from the Lauenburg School of Academics , Lenk studied mathematics , philosophy , sociology , sports science and psychology in Freiburg im Breisgau and Kiel . He was also a rower ( Ratzeburg Rowing Club ), was twice European champion, four times German champion and won at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome to that of Karl Adam trained Germany rollercoaster the gold medal . In the 1960s he worked as an amateur rowing trainer in Berlin and won a world championship as a trainer ( eighth in 1966).

After receiving his doctorate in Kiel in 1961 and his habilitation (in philosophy and sociology) at the TU Berlin , Lenk initially taught in Berlin until he accepted a professorship for philosophy at the University of Karlsruhe in 1969. Lenk was appointed to the National Academy of Kinesiology in 1981 , the International Academy of Philosophy of Science in 1995, and the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2003. After his presidency of the General Society for Philosophy in Germany (1990–1993) he became a board member of the World Society for Philosophy FISP (1993–2008) and was its vice-president (1998–2003). In 2005, Lenk was the first German to be elected President of the Institut International de Philosophie (the “world academy” of the subject).

In addition to questions of applied philosophy (philosophy of science, moral, technical, social, sports and economic philosophy), Lenk's philosophy focused on the theory of constructs of interpretation. According to this, we only ever have access to the world through interpretations ; there is no non-interpretative description of the world. The interpretation always takes place through so-called schemes, which form the basis of our knowledge and actions. According to Lenk, this inevitability of interpretation does not lead to relativism , but to pragmatic realism . Lenk's “schema-interpretationistic realism” has parallels with Hilary Putnam's conception of internal realism, but is more oriented towards social psychology, social philosophy and neuroscience. He has written studies on “constructs of interpretation”, systematized types and levels of responsibility, “personal performance” and “concrete humanity”.

Lenk has also written books on social philosophy , philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science . His list of publications includes almost 150 books (approx. 30 on sport) and a total of over 3000 titles. In 2013 his autobiographical work Ratzeburger Goldwasser was published - from Lago Albano to Lambarene , in which he looks back on his life as an athlete and humanities scholar. The WorldCat has 668 works by / about him. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, he was honored by an international commemorative publication.

In addition to many awards, Lenk is the recipient of the DOSB Ethics Prize, which was first awarded in 2010, an honor that recognizes particular merits in promoting ethical values in sport. In 2012, Hans Lenk was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports . Even at the age of 85, he is in almost daily sports training.
