Michael Evans (rower)

John Michael "Mike" Evans (born August 16, 1957 in Toronto ) is a Canadian businessman and former rower .

Michael Evans took part with the Canadian eighth in the 1977 World Rowing Championships and finished ninth. Two years later he and Timothy Britton Foster finished seventh in the two-man without helmsman at the World Championships in Bled . In 1981 he competed in the same boat class with his twin brother Mark Evans and finished sixth, in 1983 the twins reached fifth place. In 1984 the Canadian eight competed with Blair Horn , Dean Crawford , Michael Evans, Paul Steele , Grant Main , Mark Evans, Kevin Neufeld , Patrick Turner and helmsman Brian McMahon . At the 1984 Olympic Games , the Canadians finished second behind the New Zealanders in the first run and qualified for the final with a second place behind the Australians in the hope run . In the final, the Canadians won with four tenths of a second ahead of the US eighth, while the Australians won the bronze medal two seconds behind the New Zealanders.

Mark and Michael Evans were students at the University of Oxford at the time , in 1983 and 1984 they won the Boat Race with the Oxford Eighth , Michael Evans had previously completed his graduate studies at Princeton . In 1993 he started at Goldman Sachs , where he rose to Vice Chairman. In 2014 he was appointed to the board of directors of the Alibaba Group , and in 2015 he was promoted to president responsible for international business.
