Matthew Gotrel

Matthew "Matt" Gotrel , MBE (born March 1, 1989 in Chipping Campden ) is a British rower and Olympic champion.

Career

Gotrel first appeared internationally in 2012 when he took fifth place at the European Championships with the British eighth , with the boat representing the B-team to the boat used at the 2012 Olympic Games . In 2013 Gotrel competed in the eighth rowing World Cup , but was not part of the crew at the World Championships . Gotrel won his first international medal at the 2014 European Championships , when the British eighth won the bronze medal behind the German and Russian boats. At the 2014 World Championships in Amsterdam , the British eight won ahead of the German boat. In 2015, the Germany eight came in front of the British boat at the European Championships , while the British eight won the World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette ahead of the German boat. At the start of the 2016 season, Gotrel finished third with the British eighth behind the Germans and Russians at the European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel. In the final of the 2016 Olympic Games , as in the three world championships since 2013, the British managed to win ahead of Germany eighth.
