Peter Hertel (surgeon)

Peter Hertel (born June 13, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German medic and former rowing athlete. He was also President of the German Society for Trauma Surgery .

Career

After graduating from high school, Peter Hertel studied medicine in Berlin. After graduating, he specialized in trauma surgery within medical science , with a focus on the treatment of sports accidents . So he developed a special method for the treatment of cruciate ligament tears. As chief physician of the trauma surgeon at the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin-Grunewald , he treated numerous footballers from the German national football team, as well as basketball and handball players. Hertel is a specialist in surgery and trauma surgery at the Sanssouci Clinic in Potsdam .

Peter Hertel is married to Jutta Stöck , the daughter of the 1936 Olympic athletics champion, Gerhard Stöck . The two have a daughter and two sons. Son Ole Hertel was third in the German Championships in 1997 in the shot put.

Athletic career

Peter Hertel did rowing during his studies. He became a member of the Berlin rowing club . In 1965 he won the German championship in a four-man with a helmsman with a Berlin racing team consisting of Rüdiger Henning , Peter Hertel, Ulrich Luhn , Peter Kuhn and helmsman Uwe Trompler . In 1966, the same crew took second place. In 1966 Hertel also won the German championship in eighth . In 1968 Hertel took second place at the German championships in the four-man championship together with Michael Schwan , Ulrich Luhn and Peter Kuhn .

A first international success was winning the silver medal in a four with helmsman for Henning, Hertel, Luhn, Kuhn and Trompler at the European Championships in Duisburg behind the boat from the Soviet Union in 1965 . The following year, the four rowers belonged to the Germany eighth , which initially won the German championships. At the 1966 World Championships in Bled (Yugoslavia), the German eighth rowed the gold medal with the cast of Horst Meyer , Dirk Schreyer , Michael Schwan, Ulrich Luhn, Peter Hertel, Rüdiger Henning, Lutz Ulbricht , Peter Kuhn and helmsman Peter Niehusen . For the world championship title, Hertel and the eight crew received the silver laurel leaf .
