George Keys

George Arthur Keys (born December 12, 1959 in Burwood , Christchurch , New Zealand ) is a former New Zealand rower who was eighth world champion in 1982 and 1983 .

The 1.93 m tall George Keys from the Avon Rowing Club in Christchurch was a member of the New Zealand eight in 1982 , which won the title in front of the boats from the GDR and the Soviet Union at the 1982 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne. The following year, the New Zealand eighth under coach Harry Mahon won the World Championships in Duisburg in front of the boats from the GDR and Australia. At the Olympic Games in 1984, the Canadians won ahead of the US eight, the New Zealanders finished fourth, seven tenths of a second behind the Australians. At the 1985 World Rowing Championships , George Keys also finished fourth with the New Zealand eighth.

After a year break, Keys returned to eighth in 1987, finishing eighth at the World Championships in Munich . In the 1988 Olympic season, George Keys, along with Gregory Johnston , Ian Wright , Christopher White and helmsman Andrew Bird, was part of the four with helmsman who won the bronze medal at the 1988 Olympic regatta behind the boats from the GDR and Romania . At the end of his career Keys finished together with Christopher White at the 1990 World Rowing Championships in tenth place in the two-man without helmsman .
