Ulrich Karnatz

Ulrich Karnatz (born December 2, 1952 in Rostock ) is a former rower from the GDR . In 1976 and 1980, Karnatz was Olympic champion in eighth place .

The rower from ASK Vorwärts Rostock won the 1972 junior world champion in a four-man team without a helmsman . In 1973 he was in the eighth GDR champion and then belonged to the GDR eighth until 1980. In 1975, 1977 and 1979 he was again GDR champion. At the 1974 World Cup, he finished fourth with eighth. In 1975, Karnatz became world champion for the first time. In 1976 at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Bernd Baumgart , Gottfried Döhn , Werner Klatt , Roland Kostulski , Joachim Lück , Dieter Wendisch , Ulrich Karnatz, Karl-Heinz Prudöhl and helmsman Karl-Heinz Danielowski became Olympic champions with over two seconds ahead of the British boat .

In the following years, the figure eight from the GDR dominated international rowing. He was world champion in 1977, 1978 and 1979; the 1978 world champion crew was voted Team of the Year in the GDR , with Karnatz being the only 1978 world champion who had already sat in the 1976 Olympic eight.

In 1980 at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the eighth in the line-up Bernd Krauss , Hans-Peter Koppe , Ulrich Kons , Jörg Friedrich , Jens Doberschütz , Ulrich Karnatz, Uwe Dühring , Bernd Höing and helmsman Klaus-Dieter Ludwig won with an advantage of almost three seconds to the British, who again came second.
