Marin Gheorghe (born September 5, 1959 in Glodeanu-Siliştea , Buzău County ) is a former Romanian helmsman in rowing , who won two Olympic medals and twelve world championship medals, four of each color.

Athletic career

The 1.60 m tall Marin Gheorghe won his first international medal at the 1987 World Championships when he drove the two-man with helmsman with Vasile Tomoiagă and Dimitrie Popescu to the bronze medal. In the following year he sat in the run-up to the Olympic Games in 1988 and in the intermediate run in the four-man with helmsman , in the final Ladislau Lovrenschi steered the boat to second place behind the GDR four-man. Gheorge was also honored with a silver medal for his work in the preliminary and intermediate runs.

At the World Championships in 1989 Gheorghe received two medals: Together with Vasile Năstase , Dimitrie Popescu, Valentin Robu and Vasile Tomoiagă he won the title in the four. In two, he took second place with Dragoș Neagu and Ioan Șnep behind the Italian brothers Carmine and Giuseppe Abbagnale and their helmsman Giuseppe Di Capua . Also in 1990 Gheorghe competed with the four and two, but missed the medal ranks with fourth place in two and sixth place in four.

After a year without a placement at the World Championships, Gheorghe steered the Romanian eighth to second place behind the Canadians at the 1992 Olympic Games . At the 2001 World Championships in Lucerne , Gheorghe competed again in three boat classes, after a fifth place in the four and a bronze medal in the two, he received the gold medal at the end of the world championships with the Romanian eighth. In the following year Gheorghe finished fourth in the two-man and eighth place in the eighth at the World Championships . In 2003 and 2004 he started again at world championships, but no longer reached the A final.
