Martin Sauer (born December 17, 1982 in Wriezen ) is a German rower and has been the helmsman of the Germany eighth since the 2009 season . With this team he was able to celebrate his greatest successes to date: the Olympic victory in 2012 in London and the world championship titles at the World Rowing Championships in 2009 , 2010 , 2011 as well as 2017 , 2018 and 2019 .

Sauer was a member of the national team for the first time at the Junior World Championships in 2000 and became the junior world champion as helmsman of the German eight . In the following years he drove the four-man in the U23 area and was also the helmsman of the German lightweight eight in 2001.

At the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu (Japan) he won bronze in a four-man with helmsman, was world champion in this boat class in 2006 and took third place again a year later in Munich . After 2008 had brought the German lightweight eight World Cup silver, he was at the European Championships for the first time helmsman of Germany-rowing eight. He took over this position from Peter Thiede , who ended his career after the Olympic Games in Beijing .

At the rowing world championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011 he led the team to win the title, in 2010 he was also European champion with the Germany eighth. At the Olympic Games in London 2012, Sauer won the gold medal with the Germany eight.

At the 2012 World Rowing Championships for the non-Olympic boat classes, he also won the gold medal with the lightweight eight. He took silver at the 2013 World Rowing Championships , behind the United Kingdom and ahead of the United States. A year later, Sauer drove the eighth at the World Championships in Amsterdam again to the silver medal behind the British. At the 2015 World Championships, as in the previous two years, the British won ahead of the Germans. From 2013 to 2016, the Germany eighth won the European Championships, with the British only third behind the Russians in 2016. At the season highlight in the Olympic final in Rio de Janeiro, the Germans received the silver medal behind the British.

In 2017 there were still three rowers and helmsman Sauer from the previous year's boat sitting in the Germany eight. The eighth remained unbeaten in 2017 with victories at the European Championships , the World Cup in Poznan and Lucerne, and the World Championships in Sarasota . In 2018, the Germany eight won all three regattas in the World Cup with the same line-up as in 2017. At the European Championships in Glasgow , the eighth won ahead of the Dutch and the Romanians. A month and a half later, the eighth also won the title at the World Championships in Plovdiv, ahead of the Australians and the British. At the beginning of the 2019 season, the Germany eight won the 2019 European Championships in Lucerne, ahead of the British and the Dutch. At the world championships, the Germans won ahead of the Dutch and the British.

For his athletic achievements, Sauer was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Gauck on November 1, 2016 .
