Qualification criteria
A total of 550 athletes took part in the competitions, 197 women and 353 men. Two quota places were reserved for the host if no boats from the host country had qualified properly. The World Rowing Federation FISA awarded four more quota places by invitation after the qualification phase. Each country was allowed to nominate a boat in each boat class if they had the appropriate qualifications and thus use a maximum of 20 women or 28 men. The main qualifying competition was the 2011 World Championships in Bled .
For women, the nine best singles, the eight best twos, double sculls and easy double sculls, the seven best double sculls and the five best eighth of the world championships received quota places for the Olympic regatta. Further quota places were awarded in continental regattas to NOKs from Africa , Asia and Latin America in the boat classes singles and lightweight double sculls. Finally, two quota places were awarded per boat class (double fours only one quota place, one three) in an international qualifying regatta. Here NOKs were only allowed to participate in the boat classes in which they could not yet achieve a quota place. In the men's world championships, the first eleven boats of each boat class were given quota places for their NOK, only seven quota places were awarded for the eighth. In continental regattas for Africa, Asia and Latin America further quota places were then awarded in the boat classes single and light double sculls. Similar to the qualification of the women, two more quota places per boat class (eighth only one quota place, one three) were awarded in an international regatta.
The quota places reserved for the host were ultimately also awarded at the final qualifying regatta, so that four singles could secure their right to start.

In May 2012 FISA awarded four quota places by invitation. Paraguay and Myanmar were selected for the women's one, Monaco and Niger for the men's one.
Olympic rowing regatta
- The first eight places are listed because they have received an Olympic diploma
- The A-final was occupied by six boats each, which is why places 7 and 8 come from the B-final. These are marked with a (B).
